When you pour water through a filter jug or install a whole-house water treatment system, there is a very good chance that activated charcoal — specifically Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) — is doing the heavy lifting. It is one of the most widely used and cost-effective water purification media in the world.
What Does Charcoal Remove from Water?
Activated charcoal's porous structure makes it exceptionally effective at removing a broad range of waterborne contaminants:
- Chlorine and chloramines — added by municipal suppliers but unpleasant in taste and potentially harmful in high concentrations
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — solvents, pesticides, and herbicides that leach into groundwater
- Trihalomethanes (THMs) — disinfection by-products linked to long-term health concerns
- Taste and odour compounds — sulphur, earthy or musty notes from algae and bacteria
- Some heavy metals — particularly when combined with catalytic carbon or specialised media
Types of Carbon Filters
Different water treatment applications call for different carbon forms:
- Granular Activated Carbon (GAC): Used in loose-bed filter tanks, shower filters, and whole-house systems. Excellent flow rates and easy to replace or reactivate.
- Carbon Block Filters: Powdered carbon compressed into a solid block. Slower flow rate but superior contact time and sub-micron particulate removal.
- Catalytic Activated Carbon: A surface-modified form that actively breaks down chloramine molecules rather than simply adsorbing them.
How Long Does a Carbon Filter Last?
A carbon filter's service life depends on the volume of water processed, the contaminant load, and the carbon's initial capacity. As a rough guide:
- Household pitcher cartridges: 2–4 months or 200–300 litres
- Under-sink GAC filters: 6–12 months
- Whole-house carbon tanks: 3–5 years before reactivation or replacement
